Funded Activities: Participation in the GB Workshop will enable networking with Ecology Action staff and two Peruvian interns to establish working contacts in Peru and enhance the continuity and success of the proposed work. The REAP award will cover airfare to Peru and basic living expenses while working with Ciudad Saludable, a Peruvian NGO dedicated to sustainable development and environmental management. We will tour, interview leaders and community residents, and observe educational methods for nine (9) community recycling projects in Peru to determine the long-term viability of waste management services in San Francisco de Yarinacocha. |

Funded Activities:The demonstration garden will use the GROW BIOINTENSIVE (GB) model to provide appropriate varieties, planting schedules, and local plants to low income and neighborhood groups in the San Francisco Bay area suburbs. The community adjacent to and sharing the church garden includes church members, a weekly pre-school for about 50 students and staff, housing at the church for 15-16 homeless individuals, an adjacent high school proposing student garden classes, and high density subsidized apartments for single families. Proposed funds will enable a GB professional to work and develop the land and purchase needed materials and tools. |

George has requested a manager for the farm to work closely with him, learning farm operation, organic and sustainable growing methods, and the sale of farmer’s products through direct marketing or CSA sales. This position will provide valuable mentoring of a young person, passing on the knowledge and wisdom of age and experience in organic and low-income sustainable farming. |

A second goal is a sustainable land use plan that includes the establishment of native and medicinal plants, soil conservation along a creek, restoration of wildlife habitat, and a rainwater catchment system. |

Funded Activities: Training will advance small farm sustainability in Kenya by providing GROW BIOINTENSIVE agricultural methods using local organic resources to provide nutrient and pest control, enhance fertility of plant beds, and increase yields 2 to 6 fold using up to one-third less water. The Common Ground Program (CGP) will use requested funds to expand the Mini-Ag Center to increase access to water by harvesting road run off. This will enable CGP to train farmers and over 3,000 families year round through workshops, one-day classroom sessions, seven day combined classroom and field sessions, and Field-Day demonstrations. |
